Suh saga continues as Jets rescind contract offer

The New York Jets are no longer interested in Ndamukong Suh. The Jets were among the frontrunners to sign the veteran defensive lineman, but they rescinded its lucrative contract offer to Suh just days after making it, leaving questions about the franchise’s direction as well as Suh’s perceived value.

The Jets have already made big moves this offseason, retooling at the quarterback position by signing Teddy Bridgewater and moving up to third overall in the draft, where they seem likely to select one of the top three available quarterback prospects: Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Josh Allen. New York has some holes to fill on defense as well, especially since the release of underperforming defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, and plenty of cap space to work with, which is where Suh appeared to fit. The Jets were able to make Suh an offer more tempting than his other suitors, but it didn’t last long enough for Suh to take it.

Suh became a free agent after he was released by the Miami Dolphins. The 31-year-old is one of the top defensive linemen in the NFL and his release carries more than $20 million in salary cap penalties for Miami, making the circumstances of his release a bit of a mystery. Suh has a long history of disciplinary action, and reports suggested the motivation behind his release was based around locker room issues. At the time of his release, Suh had three years remaining on the massive six-year deal he signed with Miami in 2015, so the Dolphins will eventually see some cap savings from the move as well.

Suh still has plenty of interest from teams like the Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans, and New Orleans Saints, and his on-field talent will likely overshadow any perceived issues for at least one team eager to improve on defense. The Jets’ sudden change of course regarding Suh raises concerns the franchise lacks a cohesive plan for the future, even if their decision to rescind the offer was the right one for a team focused on getting younger. New York has a lot of cap space to work with and a lot of room to improve after going 5-11 in 2017, and Jets fans will be even more eager for a marquee addition after finding out they almost had Suh.
