Montreal Impact Actively Pursuing Didier Drogba

The Montreal Impact is having another difficult soccer season.  Currently seeded 8th in the MLS East Standings in a statistical tie with New York City FC, the Impact does have the advantage of five games in hand over the conference leading DC United.

But Montreal could get a critical boost on their attacking line if negotiations with a world renowned superstar play out.  The Canadian Press reported that former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is actively negotiating a new future with the Montreal Impact, which could bring the 37 year old to Saputo Stadium before the end of the 2015 MLS season.

Drogba helped Chelsea win the English Premier League trophy at the end of the season in the UK.  But the veteran striker was relegated to a substitute for many games late in the season, a path he bet would continue into future seasons with Chelsea.  As a result, Drogba voluntarily quit the club in search of a new future.

The MLS is where many notable players from European leagues have opted to relocate.  The Toronto FC welcomed Jermain Defoe from Tottenham last season, and also brought Michael Bradley over from AS Roma – who was named captain of the soccer club this season.

Montreal could definitely use some firepower on their front end.  The team lost forward Cameron Porter to a season ending injury, and loaned many of their younger forwards to the lower seeded FC Montreal.

Drogba, who is the fourth highest goalscorer in the history of Chelsea, would immediately add a fearsome striking ability for Montreal.  The team’s current number one forward Dominic Oduro, a younger player on the pitch, could learn to partner well off the experienced forward Drogba.  The Impact could form a lethal striking unit between the two players.

Drogba is also considering a move to the Chicago Fire, a team in just as much need of help as Montreal.  If the Impact is unable to make an impactful offer, Chicago could suddenly heat up with Drogba on their side.
