Eugenie Bouchard Bows Out Of Fed Cup With Team Canada

The 2015 Fed Cup the most important team tournament for women’s tennis this season.  Individual players pursue personal glory at the Grand Slam tournaments throughout the season, but the Fed Cup is the premium opportunity for one country’s top seeded players to face the best of the best from another country.

The Canadian women’s tennis team is currently seeded 8th on the world stage behind some notable heavyweights.  But the Czech Republic are the top seeds as the defending champions from 2014, and will face the lower tiered Canadian side this weekend in Quebec City.

But the hosts will play without the face of Tennis Canada in the tournament.  Eugenie Bouchard gave a statement confirming she will not join her teammates in Quebec City this weekend.

Bouchard is currently the seventh seed on the WTA individual standings, fresh off the first Grand Slam of the season at the Australian Open last month.  The 20 year old reached the quarterfinals in the land down under, but was beaten by a recurring rival for Bouchard in Maria Sharapova – Sharapova reached the Finals in Australia, but lost to Serena Williams.

After returning home, Bouchard had yet to make her decision about the Fed Cup.  She joined the Canadian team last year, and won all four of her competitive matches in the tournament, helping Tennis Canada to bet their odds in the World Group I elite bracket.

But the Montrealer’s official statement from her agent says she will recover from the Australian Open instead of overworking her body like last year.  A follow up statement from Tennis Canada wished Genie well in her pursuit of Grand Slam glory this season.

“Genie wants to be the best in the world and win Grand Slams and she needs to make the right decisions for her schedule and her training to give her the best opportunity to achieve that.”

The Fed Cup plays the first two games of the tournament this weekend before taking time off until April when the semifinal round swings into action.  The Fed Cup Finals will be played on the weekend of November 14th and 15th later this year.
